How to Manage Workplace Stress PDF  | Print |  E-mail

More often than not the source of most stress amongst individuals is derived from work.  The workplace is usually a very difficult place to deal with especially when you are working with a lot of different personalities and a lot of different people.  Working like this is just a breeding ground for stress.

Sometimes the issues arise between co-workers that can possibly strain the co-worker relationship leaving two people that work together not really being able to deal with each other.  Many times this will lead to tension build up and ultimately stress.

stressOther times stress can be caused by a supervisor or even a manager, just on the basis of them being a manager who doesn’t know what they are doing, but think they know everything.  What they never realize is that they wouldn’t look so good if it wasn’t for you working your tail off.

So now we have covered those different types of workplace stress and the types of relationships that can cause them, but the question becomes How can we manage workplace stress?

Here are a few tips that can help you manage workplace stress.

  • Communicate – a lot of issues that cause stressful situations stem from a lack of communication or a miscommunication.  A co-worker might have been expecting you to do a specific portion of a project, and yet you thought they were going to do it.  Your co-worker might have been the lead on that and since it didn’t get done on time nor did it get done properly they ended up looking bad.  Now anytime in the future when you deal with them most likely they will blame you and there will be an unnecessary tension between you.  If you communicate before hand so that you understand your roles and they understand theirs, your relationship should flow a lot smoother.
  • Diffuse the situation – There are choices that we make in everyday situations that can either add tension to a potentially volatile situation or diffuse the tension.  Choose the latter whenever possible.  Try to diffuse these situations as much as you can.  If you do you will find that you will have to deal with a lot less tension around the office.
  • Be clear about what you need – If you are dealing with someone under you, make sure that they understand you, misunderstandings cause a great deal of tension and are unnecessary.  I you are dealing with a higher up and don’t understand something do not be afraid to ask for clarification.  Clarification can mean the difference between you doing the project right or having to take more time to do the project all over again.
  • Surround yourself in a positive environment – This might seem awkward to many but if you feel comfortable in your surroundings the odds are that you will feel comfortable at work.  If you are allowed to bring in headphones and listen to music, try listening to soothing and relaxing music.  Decorate your desk with pictures and things that make you feel good so you can feel good all day especially when you need it most.
