Pregnancy can take a lot out of you.  It isn’t just the extra pounds that you seem to be lugging around at all times but it is also the constant changes in your body chemistry that makes you feel sluggish.  Sometimes the simplest of activities can leave you feeling fatigued and outright tired.
The third trimester is specifically the toughest.  It is when you are carrying the most amount of weight and it usually means that the baby is consuming a larger portion of the nutrients that you normally consume to sustain yourself on a daily basis for itself.  This makes it tough to get around and actually accomplish much.

So the big question becomes what to do about pregnancy fatique?  Well there are a couple of things that any expectant mother can do.

First thing you should do is prepare yourself to eat smaller meals throughout the day.  By eating smaller more proportioned meals throughout the day you will provide your body with the energy it needs to do the tasks that you need to accomplish.  If you eat too much your body is bogged down and it takes a lot of energy just for digestion alone.  This is true even if you are not pregnant.  You know the exhaustion that you feel right after a large meal.  A stuffed belly can leave you craving your bed quicker than almost anything else.

Next, you should try to consume more proteins and carbohydrates.  Items such as nuts, grains or beans are always a good option.  These items provide protein which is an immediate energy source.  Consuming these types of foods in the forms of snacks can leave you feeling a bit more energized and ultimately help you combat fatigue.

pregnancy fatigueWhile pregnant one of the best things you can do for yourself and your baby to combat fatigue is to eat a good breakfast.  Before you begin your day and start doing all of your errands or going to work you should provide your body with all of the essential nutrients it needs to conduct the right amount of activity.  Starting off with proteins and carbohydrates at this time is a great idea.  Some whole grain cereal coupled with possible a fruit would be a nice start.

Try not to eat too late.  Eating too late does not allow your body to really make use of the nutrients it is consuming.  By eating earlier you will provide your body with more energy than you normally would have at this time.  Remember that proteins are good for immediate energy as it cannot be stored and carbohydrates are good for energy down the line as it can be stored and used at another time.

Remember everything we do requires energy and if we don’t have the energy source we will end up feeling tired as a result of our body not wanting to do it.  So provide yourself with enough nutrients to maintain yourself and your child and don’t forget to get enough rest along the way as well.  Sleeping too little while obvious can also have its toll on you while pregnant.
