High blood pressure – Introduction The heart pumps the blood to the various organs. They pump the blood through the arteries during the systole. High blood pressure is a condition in which the systolic pressure goes above 140 mm/Hg and the diastolic pressure goes above 90 mm/Hg. At times the high blood pressure can also be a secondary disease of the kidney diseases. The high blood pressure is a contributing factor to the development of cardiovascular disease in many individuals. The chance of getting the coronary disease increases with the increase of systolic and diastolic pressure.
Dietetic management for high blood pressure Diet is very important for the management of high blood pressure. Kempner’s rice diet is one of the desired diets even in severe cases of high blood pressure. This diet comprises of strict rice, fruit and sugar diet. It has given very impressive results for the patients in even severe cases. The diet for an obese should be framed such that the person consumes only foods that are of low caloric value. To maintain the normal nutrition level, 50 g of proteins are required daily. Fats cannot be consumed in large amounts as they possess the danger of initiating atherosclerosis. However 40 to 50 g of fats as vegetable oil per day is permitted. Carbohydrates are the main source of energy. Carbohydrates which are easily digestible can be consumed without any restriction. The minerals such as sodium, potassium, magnesium and calcium are capable of altering the blood pressure. Sodium salts are limited as they are very sensitive. Dietary potassium should be increased to reduce the blood pressure. The relation between calcium and blood pressure is not well published. However, in some cases it is noted that the increase in the consumption of calcium increases the blood pressure. Normally the water restriction is not advised. Drinking beverages like caffeinated coffee has no effect on the blood pressure so, it can be consumed liberally. The food items that are allowed for a patient with high blood pressure are bread or chappaties made of wheat, rice and maize, cereals, cooked rice, pulses, milk and milk products, vegetable soups, cooked vegetables, dessert, dried fruits, nuts and beverages. The food items that are to be avoided are fish or chicken meat, egg and egg products, papads, pastry and sodium salts.
